A PERSONAL EMPOWERMENT JOURNEY
Career & Personal Development Specialist, Alcyon "Alli" Smalls
I am a single/divorced mother of five beautiful children and two beautiful grandchildren. My experiences as a parent are diverse. My first experience as a parent was not as I envisioned. I was unmarried when I became pregnant with my daughter and my journey into parenthood began as a single parent. Although I had a good relationship with my daughter’s father, there was a future for us as parents, but no future for us as a couple. Thankfully, we realized the important responsibility we shared in rearing our daughter. As grateful as I was for that cooperative relationship, I knew that I did not want to have another child without a husband who was dedicated and committed to me, as well as our children.
I later met a dedicated young man who I eventually married and I believed my family was complete. He and I agreed that we wanted several children together and began our family immediately. Unfortunately, after 11 years, my relationship with my husband came to an amicable end. From that union we had a daughter and three sons. I found myself as a single/divorced parent and primary custodian of five children aged 14, 8, 7 and 4 year old twins.
It appeared that on some level, my life as a parent mirrored my mother’s life. She was a single parent, then a married parent, then a single/divorced parent. My mother was a strong woman who reared nine children as a single/divorced mother. She did not live long enough to meet my children. I was eighteen years old when she died of cancer.
I realized as I matured as a woman and a parent that much of my strength passed down from my mother. My relationship with my mother was very distant. When I became a parent, I promised myself and my unborn children that this part of my life would not mirror my mother’s life as a parent.
As a single, married, and now a single/divorced parent, I have experienced a variety of challenges as a parent. Like my mother, I began as a parent with a limited education (high school diploma). Unlike my mother, I was fortunate enough to further my education. I earned an Associate’s degree in public service, a Bachelor’s degree in counseling, and a Master’s degree in counseling with a concentration in marriage and therapy. My post-secondary education has provided me with a wealth of knowledge and information, as well as opportunities to put into practice the very knowledge I acquired while earning my degrees.
A few of the greatest lessons I’ve learned as a parent are that goals, determination, and a good support system are essential elements in successful navigation of family dynamics. These three factors are strong motivators for any caregiver with the responsibility of successfully guiding the lives of young children.

Grace for the Grands
Their service to their families is not finished yet!! Grandparents are the jewels of society. As we age and deal with the inevitability of growing in grace, we may feel that the world is progressing at mind numbing speed. We may also experience feelings of antiquation and reduced value. It’s all a matter of perspective. The world was moving at the same relative speed as we experienced our evolutionary transformations as we grew to adulthood. Yet…grands are still here and they still have work to do to help shape the lives of the future!
